Bedbugs spread easily in apartment blocks because they travel through shared walls, corridors, laundry areas and secondhand furniture — not because apartments are inherently less clean than houses. Prevention is mostly about limiting the ways bedbugs can hitch a ride into your unit.
Be cautious with secondhand furniture
Secondhand mattresses, sofas and upholstered furniture are one of the most common ways bedbugs enter a home. If you're buying used furniture, inspect seams, folds and joints carefully before bringing it inside, particularly for anything upholstered.
Check after travel
Bedbugs are frequent hitchhikers in luggage from hotels and guesthouses. After a trip, inspect luggage before bringing it into the bedroom, and consider washing worn clothing on a hot cycle as a precaution rather than putting it straight into drawers.
Know the early signs
Small rust-coloured spots on bedding, an unexplained musty smell, or small itchy bite marks in a row are early indicators worth acting on quickly. Bedbugs are far easier to treat when caught early — waiting until an infestation is visibly established usually means a longer, more involved treatment.
Reduce clutter near the bed
Bedbugs hide in cracks, seams and clutter close to where people sleep. Keeping the area around and under the bed relatively clear makes it easier to spot early signs and gives them fewer places to establish themselves.
In shared or multi-unit buildings
If you live in an apartment block and learn a neighbouring unit has had bedbugs, it's worth being extra vigilant for a few weeks, since bedbugs can move along shared walls, plumbing and electrical conduits. Flag any early signs to your landlord or property manager quickly rather than waiting.
